WHAT IS RAFA?
Established in Colorado in 1990 following the collapse of the Communist regime in Romania, the Romanian-American Freedom Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to both humanitarian and educational causes. RAFA's primary objective is to provide assistance to children and families in need throughout Romania, as well as to supply medical equipment and supplies to hospitals in the country. Each year, the organization raises funds for these efforts through an annual Romanian Festival, held in downtown Boulder. The festival also serves as a platform to introduce the local community to Romanian culture, featuring traditional folk dances, ethnic cuisine, and artifacts.

IT WAS A SNOWY FEBRUARY DAY...
when Dana Gall, Irina Frangopol, and Ingrid Fotino came together at Dr. Iulia Gorelik's home to discuss the establishment of a charitable organization. In the subsequent meetings, members from the Blagaila, Drosu, Forsea, Fotino, and Stan families were elected as the organization's first officers. By the fall of 1990, Ingrid Fotino had successfully completed the formal incorporation process, and the organization was prepared to operate as an officially recognized, tax-exempt entity.

OUR HISTORY
RAFA's roots trace back to the revolutionary upheaval in Romania in December of 1989.
Shortly after the collapse of the Communist regime, a group of Romanian-Americans in Colorado gathered at the State Capitol in Denver to show their support for the revolution and to honor those who had lost their lives under the dictatorship. With the newfound freedoms in Romania, these individuals were eager to lend a helping hand to their homeland. The Romanian-American Freedom Alliance was born out of this passion for making a difference.

THE MISSION of the organization was two-fold: to provide support to families in need throughout Romania, whether due to the loss of a parent, severe illness, fire, handicaps, or old age; and to promote Romanian culture and history by educating the local community.
Since its inception, RAFA has been unwavering in its commitment to its foundational mission. Over the years, the organization has not only maintained its dedication to supporting Romanian families in distress but has also expanded its reach and impact. Recognizing the evolving needs of the community, RAFA has initiated various programs, from economic aids to educational scholarships, ensuring that our help reaches the most vulnerable corners of Romania. Furthermore, the organization has amplified its efforts in cultural promotion. Beyond the annual festivals, RAFA has collaborated with schools, museums, and other cultural institutions (Casa Buna, Mircea Eliade Cultural Association) in both Romania and the U.S. These events delve deep into Romanian art, literature, and history, fostering a richer understanding and appreciation among the local community. The organization's growth is a testament to its adaptability and its unwavering commitment to both humanitarian aid and cultural preservation. As RAFA looks to the future, it remains rooted in its mission, ever eager to bridge gaps, heal wounds, and celebrate the rich tapestry of Romanian heritage.
